WA improves on litter

As Keep Australia Beautiful week kicked off yesterday we heard the good news that Western Australia has reduced the amount of litter we produce. Unfortunately WA is still one of the worst states for litter.

Environment Minister Bill Marmion says the National Litter Index 2010-11 found WA had made a small improvement since the last survey 12 months ago, with the volume of litter per 1,000sqm down from 9.44 litres to 9.03 litres.

“While this marked a positive change, there has regrettably been an increase in the number of litter items found - this year recorded 75 items per 1,000sqm, up from 71 last year,” he says.

“WA is currently ranked second in the nation behind New South Wales for volume of litter per 1,000sqm and third for the number of litter items found per 1,000sqm. These figures show that as a community, we need to do more to reduce litter."

It's amazing how much of an impact a slow lifestyle can have on your rubbish output. If you cook from scratch, you'll find you throw out much less packaging. Also cooking smarter, means less wastage. You can also resuse or recycle many of your scraps. What other ideas do you have to reduce our litter? Hit comment below and share your thoughts.

If you'd like some ideas how to reduce your litter or how you can help out during Keep Australian Beautiful Week check out http://www.kab.org.au/get-involved/. There will be events happening all over WA until Sunday.
