On The Road

Racing to relax?

Racing to relax?

With plenty of West Aussies expected to travel long distances on rural roads over the Western Australia Day long weekend, we take a look at why it’s important to plan ahead so you can enjoy the ride, as well as your time at your destination.

Did you know that Western Australia covers an area of 2.5 million km2 – that’s bigger than the whole of Western Europe or four times the size of Texas!

Distances between remote townships can be vast and in some cases conditions can be very hot and dry with fuel and food also scarce. This doesn’t mean that you should speed up to reach your destination, but rather plan ahead to ensure you have places to stop and rest during your trip, and bring all necessary supplies you  may need along the way.

So how can you relax and enjoy the ride on the way to your holiday? Here are some top tips from the Office of Road Safety.

  • Always tell someone where you are going, your return dates and your itinerary.
  • Get a good night’s sleep before departing, stay somewhere overnight if on a long journey and share the driving if you can.
  • Make sure your vehicle is in top mechanical condition.
  • Check road conditions before departure. Rain can make some tracks and roads impassable. When travelling on unsealed roads use caution and 'read' the road well ahead of the vehicle.
  • Stick to the speed limit, for everyone’s safety.
  • Carry at least 4-5 litres of water per person, per day (preferably in at least two containers).
  • Use a detailed recent road map (it is a good idea to keep track of your mileage so you always know where you are).
  • Carry extra food, fuel, water and vehicle spares if you are travelling on remote tracks.
  • Large slow-moving agricultural machinery may be encountered on highways and local roads, so take care when overtaking.
  • Keep alert for wildlife such as kangaroos and emus, especially at dusk and dawn when visibility may be poor and they become more active.
  • Take regular breaks from driving to keep refreshed and admire the sights.

Remember the reason you are taking a break – to relax and unwind. Take this mindset with you when you hop in the car to drive to your holiday destination.

I admire your efforts that you have putted here. I would like to mention an incident which happened with my friend when we were on our holidays at Niagara Falls. We stayed at one of the famous hotel in Niagara Falls. My friend Andy woke up early and left to explore the nearby places without telling us. He did not come back that evening. With the help of local authorities we found him 2 days later lying unconscious. Till date whenever I think of this incidents I feel horrified. Dan Costabile, 00:03/11 October
